OVERVIEW

In this project, you will learn about the parts of a rocket, the forces involved in a flight, and everything you need to know to start designing and building your own rockets from scratch.

Experience with rockets or a capable mentor is recommended.

Goals

Students will learn about:

Parts of a rocket and the forces involved in a flight.

RockSim and the basic functionality.

Design a rocket, test and analyze the rocket through simulations.

Make adjustments and record the outcomes.

Materials Needed

RockSim

Details

RockSim is a capable rocketry simulation software that allows you to design and test rockets before you buy a single component. We are going to design some rockets with some goals in mind. Get creative! There are 1,000 ways to meet each objective, see if you can do it in glorious fashion.

Rocket #1

Must utilize a 29mm motor mount.

Optimized rocket for highest altitude.

Rocket #2

Must deliver a 50g payload to 1,200 ft.

Cannot use an engine larger than a G impulse.

Rocket #3

Cannot use an engine larger than a C Impulse.

Must have a flight time greater than 1 minute.

Creating in RockSim

RockSim is a capable program and user-friendly, but you may need some assistance with some of the more complicated steps. If you don’t have a capable mentor, familiar with RockSim, at your disposal - Apogee Rockets has a comprehensive set of videos that will show you step-by-step how to do anything you need. You can find those at: https://www.apogeerockets.com/RockSim/Rocksim_Video_Tutorials A tutorial on how to design rockets from scratch can be found here.
